25th May 2013This week: Muncaster Festival at Muncaster Castle, Ravenglass

Muncaster Castle is the kind of place where its annual schedule is just as full as its history. Records show the castle, which is believed to have been built on Roman remains here in a part of the Western Lake District rife with Roman history, has definitely been the home of the Pennington family since 1208 and there are even suggestions the family could have lived there since as early as 1026.

9th May 2013Head straight for it: The Beacon, Whitehaven

There is so much history and culture in the Western Lake District that it is easy to wonder whether you will ever find time for it all. But there’s nothing like arriving home with some interesting historical facts to drop nonchalantly into conversation over dinner, or some cultural knowledge to fragrantly show off with.
