29th November 2013Muncaster Castle: Christmas the way it should be

Call me a Scrooge, but the fact that Christmas seems to come earlier every year doesn't really put me in the festive spirit. Yuletide adverts seem to begin dominating the airwaves after the summer is barely over, while the 'It's Christmas' plays in every shop you visit. However, despite all this, Christmas does bring out the best in some places.

26th November 2013Liar, liar sets the world on fire

We are all used to hearing a few tall tales down the pub, but it is not often we go specifically to get lied to. However, last week that's exactly what myself and a happy crowd of revellers went to the Western Lakes to do. The Bridge Inn at Santon Bridge is well worth a visit for a pint on any occasion, but on Thursday everyone was enjoying a side order of porky scratchings too.

15th November 2013Whinlatter Forest: Trails, tracks and treetops

With so many wonderful wide open spaces in the Western Lake District, I have to admit that I have sometimes doubted whether there is much point going for a walk in the woods. In an area that has fine coastal and mountain views in spades, I have been reluctant to enter the forest in case my vista is reduced to ranks of tree trunks.

8th November 2013Watendlath: A pool of tranquillity

There are some places in the Western Lake District that are given a special frisson of magic in the golden light of autumn. The payoff for the chill that afflicts the nose and the toes is a feast of colour for the eyes as myriad hues of ochre, chestnut and saffron dapple the woodland.

1st November 2013Lazy Sunday: The Wheatsheaf Inn, Low Lorton

There are some Sundays when the day just revolves around lunch. These are the kind of days when a lazy morning is followed by a short walk to whet the appetite and a long lunch precedes an afternoon snooze.

Key to this kind of day are a nice place to wander and a lunch that does it justice and the Wheatsheaf Inn, at Low Lorton, in the Western Lake District has both in spades.
